User Experience & Web Design

CodeCombat is an educational gaming platform used by over 20 million students and 320,000 teachers worldwide. It features two fantasy role-play games, “CodeCombat” and “Ozaria,” where students learn Computer Science by typing real Python, Javascript, and C++. Here are a few select projects I worked on during my time as the principal designer there.

CodeCombat

2018 - 2023

01 website redesign

I collaborated with designer Ling Tuo to redesign the CodeCombat website with the goal of refreshing the look and feel of the brand while making it more appealing to students.

To complement the new tagline, “Learn to code through the power of play,” our designs incorporated more visual elements from the game itself, such as hero characters and pixelated graphics, enhancing the playfulness of the CodeCombat’s web presence.

I also revamped the sign-up process, making the different pathways to sign up easier to navigate. The overall impact of this project was a 78% increase in sign-ups from the homepage.

02 UX Design: teacher dashboard

I also worked on a year-long project to redesign the teacher dashboard, a platform for teachers to access lesson plans, student progress information, project rubrics, and much more.

My design process included interviews and classroom visits to understand teachers’ needs and pain points, developing a user journey to prioritize platform features, multiple rounds of prototyping, testing, and iterating, and presentations to internal stakeholders.

As a result, we saw a 54% increase in the number of teachers who finished creating a class out of those who started the process, and a 617% increase in the number of teachers who viewed curriculum resources.

03 UX Design: ozaria gaming interface

In 2018, CodeCombat developed a new adventure game called Ozaria. I collaborated with artists, game designers, and learning designers to create a new gaming interface that was both more visually appealing and more effective at teaching students how to code.

My design process included several rounds of user testing with low fidelity prototypes in order to finesse the platform to best meet the learning needs of students.
